Raceway renames 5K run to honor slain officer

From Staff Reports

Darlington Raceway has renamed its annual 5K run in honor of the Darlington police officer who was killed nearly a year ago when a gunman ambushed law-enforcement officers in Florence County.

On Nov. 1, the raceway will host its second consecutive 5K event, which will now be called the Terrence Carraway Memorial 5K, with proceeds benefiting the Terrence F. Carraway Foundation, a nonprofit raising donations for the S.C. Fallen Officers Memorial Park on South Main Street in Darlington.

“We’re excited to bring back the 5K event to Darlington Raceway,” said raceway president Kerry Tharp. “It’s our honor to rename the event the Terrence Carraway Memorial 5K and have the proceeds benefit the Terrence F. Carraway Foundation. We encourage runners of all ages to register early for this event and enjoy a unique experience running under the lights, while contributing to a worthy and meaningful cause.”

Participants may pre-register online for a fee of $25 per participant by visiting DarlingtonRaceway5K.itsyourrace.com/register.

Day-of registration will be $30 per person. Packet pickup for the 5K will be available Oct. 31 at the Darlington Raceway Museum from 5-8 p.m. or on event day at the track beginning at 5 p.m.

The 5K course will start and end at the start-finish line of the race track. All participants will receive a T-shirt. Sponsorship and vendor opportunities are available by contacting Tyler Grube, director of corporate sales, at 843-395-8877 or tgrube@darlingtonraceway.com.

Carraway, who lived in Darlington, was a sergeant with the Florence Police Department, where he had served for 30 years. On Oct. 3 last year, he and another officer, Investigator Farrah Turner, were killed when a gunman opened fire on several law-enforcement officers in Florence County.

The incident sparked outrage and grief across the country, with officials from President Donald Trump to S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster to U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., expressing their concern.

As the one-year anniversary of the tragedy approaches, one local government has already taken notice. Florence County Council last week declared Oct. 3 as Heroes Day in honor of Turner and Carraway.
