Pee Dee Math, Science & Technology Academy Awarded SC Department of Education Subgrant

BISHOPVILLE– Pee Dee Math, Science & Technology Academy (PDMSTA) has been awarded the South Carolina Department of Education Subgrant for the development and implementation of a 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC).

The purpose of the program is to provide, during non-school hours, opportunities for communities to establish activities in community learning centers that provide options for academic enrichment, including but not limited to tutorial services to help students meet the state academic standards, youth development activities, mathematics, science, career and technical programs. In addition, the 21st CCLC is established to offer families of students served by community learning centers possibilities for active and meaningful engagement in their children’s education.
PDMSTA’s 21st CCLC, entitled Future Leaders Activating Potential and Purpose (F.L.A.P.P.) Camp, began September 10, 2018. The afterschool program serves 100 PDMSTA students. It’s in place to build and develop innovative thinkers, history makers, confident and self-motivated citizens so that they are equipped and empowered to change the world.

“After school programs are a crucial component of the academic process. Our F.L.A.P.P Program will help our students academically and socially. I am anticipating positive progress from our students as a result of this program,” said E. Keith Bailey, PDMSTA Executive Director.

PDMSTA’S F.L.A.P.P Camp focuses on enrichment activities consisting of remedial and tutorial services, educational field trips, physical education, summer programming and character development training. English and mathematics are at the center of the program; however, components of science, technology and arts are included as well. In addition to that, family engagement activities, such as family night, family teacher conferences and family workshops are scheduled.

The Pee Dee Math Science & Technology Academy (PDMSTA) is a tuition-free public charter school established in fall of 2013. PDMSTA offers a unique approach to students located in the heart of rural Pee Dee region of South Carolina and serves students kindergarten through ninth grade.
