Old photos ‘brought back many good memories’

Editor’s note: This is in response to “Poses from the past,” a collection of old photos discovered in a warehouse being demolished in Darlington, which appeared in the Sept. 18 issue of the News & Press.

I was very interested in the pictures in the paper this week. They brought back many good memories.

I am one of (a) very few still living from the Team of ’47 (a girls’ basketball team in one of the photos) and I will be 90 in March.

The pretty girl in the bottom right corner is Annie Bell Strickland (later married George “Buddy” Stokes).

The cheerleaders are Irene Rogers Evans, Lexie Margaret Stokes, Annie Bell Strickland, James Patterson, Norine Goodson (Beckham), Lillie Mae Stout and Orine Dixon.

The 1947 (basketball) team: First row, Lexie Margaret Stokes, manager Betty Shearin, Orine Dixon, Norine Goodson, Buena Merritt, Dot Law and Myrtle White. Behind Coach White is Llewellyn Fields. This team went to state championship in Columbia and lost by 2 points to Lancaster.

The 1948 (basketball) team, first string: Coach Myrtle White, Ina Clair Bryant, Emma Dell Buie, Norine Goodson, Helen Coggeshall, Annie Bell Strickland and Betty Shearin. They also went to “state” and I think they won.

Incidentally, Coach White later married Randolph Norment, brother of Bet Phillips.
