My Resolution

By Chief Danny Watson, City of Darlington Chief of Police

The end of 2016 has come and past. Commonly people will endeavor to make themselves better by coming up with some type of resolution. Gyms will fill with people who are determined to get in better shape. Churches will fill with those people who are moved to be closer to God. Cabinets will be emptied of unhealthy snacks and food. This will last maybe a month, sometimes two for the really determined. When March arrives, people will have forgotten or just let their resolutions fall by the wayside until the end of 2017. This is when they will look back with thoughts of what could have been.

During the approach of 2016, my resolution was to reach out to those in our community. In this endeavor I brought others along with me to help. The plan was simple: to help as many people as we could. Sitting here reflecting on what was done and what was left undone in 2016 I arrived at this notion. I found this to have been the most rewarding of any resolution that I have ever entered into thus far. Admittedly we didn’t change the world but we made it a little brighter for some. So my 2017 resolution was to spread this idea to others and encourage them to do the same.

So as 2017 spreads out before you, endeavor to do one nice thing a month for someone that is in need. There is certainly no lack of persons that are in need and I am sure that if you open your eyes you can find them. I am not talking about donating money to a charity. I mean quite simply get out there and do something for someone else. It can be as simple as holding the door open for someone at a store or business. Perhaps it might be a kind word to those who are feeling down or are having a bad day. There are many things that you could do. You will be really surprised how much it brightens your day and at the same time it shows others that the world is not as dark a place as they might think.

One thing a month does not seem like that much. Hopefully as you see how much of a difference it makes for you and others it will make you want to do it more often than just once a month. Soon you may want to do it once a week or even once a day. There is not a day that couldn’t be brightened by a small act of kindness so why not give it a try?
