This year, Trinity-Byrnes Collegiate School’s varsity baseball team found itself in newer and tougher territory.
“We changed regions this year,” said Titans coach Mike Rogers. “We moved up to 3A. We’re in a real tough region.”
And there’s another challenge: “We’re a young team,” said Rogers. “We only have three seniors. … Our lead hitter is a freshman. … We’ve had a whole new coaching staff.”
The Titans’ varsity baseball season began March 1, Rogers said, and will wrap up the end of April. As of March 26, as the team prepared to play another game, “Right now, we’re 4-6,” Rogers said. “We want to turn that around and have a better second half.”
“We’ve got six more region games (as of March 26), then we’ve got a spring break tournament,” said Rogers, now in his fifth year at Trinity-Byrnes.
“We’re just looking to get better and finish the second half of the season better than we did the first half,” said Rogers.
“Defensively, we were strong at the beginning, then we took a step back, now we’re working to get our defense back to where it was at the beginning of the year. Same thing with pitching. We’re trying to get it back to where it was at the beginning.”
One highlight of the season so far, the coach said, was a Charleston trip the Titans took.
“We did a Charleston trip and played very well,” he said. “We went down and played First Baptist and Porter-Gaud, had a good time, stayed overnight. The kids hit the ball really well.”
But the season’s not over. “Half a season to go. We’re looking forward to making it a real good half.”
