Council needs to adopt a team attitude

During my attendance at the May 2 City Council meeting I learned the $1.6 million dollar grant for the Storm Water issues would serve only 17-25% of Darlington residents. This was particularly surprising in light of our recent $4 additional tax to citizens and $6 to businesses raised last year for a new stormwater fund.

As I listened, Councilman Bryant Gardner made several well thought out and researched suggestions concerning the distribution of those funds. It seemed District 2 would have their problem alleviated while the rest of Darlington could benefit from purchasing an HVAC system to unclog storm drains, think South Main Street and Cashua. Bryant also suggested several other “whole community” ideas.

I was amazed to hear the hostile reactions from certain council members who refused to even discuss the merits of Councilman Gardner’s suggestions. Although councilmembers do represent their districts I thought the idea was to work together for the betterment of our entire community. Our city and her residents would really benefit from a “town first” team attitude. Kudos to Councilman Gardner for thinking outside of the box and presenting his ideas with the respect he was not shown by his peers.

Sincerely,
Tina Mahoney
Darlington
