Lamar – The Darlington Lady Falcons and first year head coach Brad Knox kept the young season going off in the right direction this past Tuesday, December 13, winning 60-24 over the Lamar Lady Silver Foxes.
In one of their most complete games of the year so far, the Lady Falcons opened up to 17-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. At half Darlington was up 34-10.
“We told them we couldn’t come out sluggish, play down low to another team’s level,” Knox said after the win. “I think that every game we play we are getting better, especially from the first game of the season. We are passing the ball more, we are sharing the ball, and our “bigs” are playing good.”
Darlington stretched that lead to 40-10 in the third as the Lady Falcons defense was absolutely stifling the entire night. Out of 24 total points scored by the Lady Silver Foxes 10 of those points came on free throws. The Lady Silver Foxes only made six field goals.
“What I told the team earlier is defense wins championships,” Knox said on the defensive effort. “We’ve got to be sound; we’ve got to be disciplined on defense. We have to be able to stand in front of our man and that is what we talked to them about all week.”
A lot of the offense for the Lady Falcons came in the transition offense as Darlington was able to take Lamar’s missed shots, run down the court and convert them into layups.
“They are very athletic,” Lamar girls head coach Randolph Scott said on the Lady Falcons transition offense. “They are an athletic group and they get up and down the floor real well.”
Lamar found most of its success in the second half scoring a combined 14 points in the final two quarters compared to just 10 points in the first two quarters.
“Defensively we could have been better, offensively I was without my starting point guard. She’s out with a concussion, but we don’t make any excuses,” Scott said after the game. “We get out here, we line it up and we work as hard as we can work and Darlington played a good game tonight.”
While the win is great the Lady Falcons, who are well on their way to winning more games this year than they did last year, the loss is not all that bad for the Lady Silver Foxes.
“Overall I felt like our hustle was there,” Scott said on Lamar’s overall effort in the game. “We are so young on the back end and coming off the bench. You have ninth graders coming off the bench, tenth graders coming off the bench, but we will get better as time goes on.”
Lamar now will held into the Christmas looking to improve and get ready for region play.
