Jewel Stanton Powers

FLORENCE – With broken hearts, members of the James Powers family wish to announce the passing of our beloved matriarch.
Jewel Stanton Powers, affectionately known as Bunny, age 90, died peacefully in her home on the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022, surrounded by her loved ones. The youngest daughter of the late John McLaurin “Mack” Stanton and the late Elva Quick Stanton, Jewel was born on July 23, 1931, in Bennettsville; she was then raised, attended the Methodist church and educated in rural Marlboro County and neighboring Gibson, NC.
Upon her graduation in 1949, she worked a short while in the telephone industry until her marriage in January 1954. Jewel then devoted her time selflessly as a homemaker for her spouse, children and later grandchildren. She enjoyed following political current events, had a passion for reading, and most especially loved reading and reciting poetry; she adored all children and was deeply fond of four-legged furry friends.
In addition to her parents, Jewel was predeceased by two wonderful sons-in-law, John F. Truluck and Daniel B. Causey, III, as well as her eight loving siblings, which included her brothers Hubert Stanton, Jack Stanton, Royce Stanton, Bob Stanton, Curtice Stanton, Lynn Stanton, Alvin Stanton and a sister, Dorothy Stanton Gibson.
Jewel is survived by her husband of 68 years, Lt. Col. (Retired) James Alvin Powers; her four daughters, Debbie P. Truluck, Nancy P. Causey, Tara Stanton Powers and Brantlee P. (Bill) Haire and three grandsons, C. Cody Truluck, Daniel B. Causey IV, and Caleb C. Haire.
A special thank you to Mary Kay Belissary, who served as Jewel’s physical therapist; and more importantly, as an attentive and compassionate friend throughout Jewel’s illness.
The family received friends on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022, at the home of Bill and Brantlee Haire, 328 Rivergate Dr. (at the back of Palmetto Shores), Florence, SC 29501. A private celebration of life will be held at a later time.
Finally, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, www.stjude.org; or to the Darlington County Humane Society, PO Box 503 Darlington, SC 29540.
A guestbook is available online at www.belkfunerhome.com.
