The Terrence F. Carraway Foundation, in partnership with the Darlington Area Recreation Department and first responders, hosted a successful Youth Fun Day on Tuesday, April 7, drawing a large and energetic crowd to the park and playground at 100 Magnolia Street.
Held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event offered a wide variety of activities for children and families, including free food, painting, games, music, slides, and a bouncy house. Youth of all ages filled the park, enjoying a day centered on fun, fellowship, and community engagement. Of course, sports were a major part of the fun. Many could be seen playing basketball, participating in games, some showing off their paint designs while enjoying a delicious lunch.
Local first responders played an important role in the event. Members of the Darlington Police Department and Darlington Fire Department were on hand, providing safety information and interacting with attendees. Representatives from the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office also attended, helping to strengthen relationships between local youth and law enforcement.
The event not only served as a day of recreation but also as a tribute to the life and legacy of Sgt. Terrence F. Carraway. On October 3, 2018, Sgt. Carraway was fatally shot while responding to assist three Florence County Sheriff’s Office deputies. Remembered for his leadership, compassion, and unwavering dedication to service, his influence continues to be felt throughout the community.
The Terrence F. Carraway Foundation was established in January 2019 by his widow, Allison Carraway, to honor his memory and carry forward his commitment to helping others. Mrs. Carraway expressed her appreciation for the strong turnout and was especially pleased to see participants of all ages coming together in a positive and uplifting environment.
The Youth Fun Day stands as a reflection of Sgt. Carraway’s enduring legacy—bringing people together, supporting youth, and fostering a sense of unity that continues to inspire the Darlington community.
