Huge crowd attends Back to School Resource Fair

The Public Square came alive with energy, laughter, and generosity recently as families from across the area gathered for the 6th Annual Back to School and Resource Fair on the Square. Held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., the event drew an estimated crowd of more than 500 parents, children, and community members, making it one of the largest turnouts in the fair’s six-year history.
As the sun began to set over downtown Darlington, the square transformed into a bustling hub of activity. Tables lined with backpacks, notebooks, and school essentials stretched across the historic gathering space, while local vendors, educators, and community organizations set up booths to connect with the families who came looking for a helping hand as the 2026-2027 school year approaches.
For many families, the fair offered far more than free supplies — it provided a sense of connection and support ahead of the new academic year. Children moved from table to table, eyes lighting up as they picked out backpacks and school kits, while parents took the opportunity to speak directly with local educators and community resource providers about programs available to help their students succeed.
Volunteers and organizers worked throughout the evening to ensure the steady stream of attendees kept moving smoothly, distributing a substantial supply of book bags and school materials donated and gathered specifically for the event. By the time the fair wrapped up at 8 p.m., organizers estimated that up to 500 people passed through the square — a testament to both the growing need in the community and the event’s reputation as a trusted, welcoming resource for local families.
Now in its sixth year, the Back to School and Resource Fair on the Square has become a cornerstone summer tradition in Darlington, bringing together schools, businesses, and neighbors in a shared mission: making sure every child heads back to the classroom prepared, supported, and ready to succeed.
