Geraldine M. Malloy

Geraldine M. Malloy of Chesterfield died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Chesterfield on Oct. 22, 2020, one week after celebrating her 79th birthday. She was born Oct. 13, 1941, in Chesterfield to the late Nathaniel Mumford and Leasie Chapman Mumford. Geraldine married her husband, John A. Malloy, on April 2, 1958, and they were together for 62 years. They raised their children in Chesterfield and the family belonged to St. James AME Zion Church. As a fourth generation member of the church, Geraldine was honored to share her legacy. Geraldine had an unwavering faith and strength of spirit that was a source of inspiration to all who met her. She was the historian to a large, close-knit family and Mother of the St. James AME Zion Church, where as a lifelong member she served in several capacities, including Deaconess, Assistant Class Leader and Gospel Choir. She was instrumental in establishing the pastor’s aide, gospel choir and the grandparents’ program — a building-fund initiative that resulted in the payoff of the church’s mortgage. Geraldine was an avid reader and excellent cook. Most famous among friends and family for her delicious desserts, her specialties were greens, macaroni and cheese, chocolate cake, red velvet cake and peach cobbler. Known for her deep knowledge of the community she called home, she deeply loved her family and was always ready to help a friend or neighbor in need. Active with a charismatic personality, Geraldine loved flowers, gardening, sewing and gospel music. She lived a full life of shared love, accomplishment and deep purpose. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Nathaniel Legusta Mumford, Anderson Mumford, Jesse James Mumford and Bobby G. Chapman and her sister Mavis L. Lowery. Geraldine is survived by her husband John; daughters, Madgielene Malloy and Cheryl D. Malloy of Chesterfield; sons, Gerald (Davita) Malloy of Hartsville and Johnny R. (Leevette) Malloy of Columbia; and grandchildren, Donovan, Jonathan, Jordan, Morgan and Moses Malloy, and Khrystyan Edens (George Williams). She is also survived by her sisters, Shirley (John) Gordon and Barbara McQueen of Cheraw and Jeanette Sellars of High Point, N.C. The family would also like to recognize her dear friend Mary Rose Bittle of Chesterfield; godsons Joe R. (Genese) Bracy of Ruby, Duncan Bracy of Chesterfield and Robert (Vida) Fulford of Pageland; and goddaughters, Ann (Al) Horner of Douglas, Ga., Robin (Alfred) Griggs of Darlington, and Beth (Stuart) Stepp of Ruby. She loved them all dearly along with her nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends including: Peggy Marshall Coit, Linda Harrington, Lorine Hough, Gloria J. McFarlan, Eddie Mumford, Beverly Smith, Barbara Watson, Doris Xavier, and the Love, Smith and Sowell families. Services were held on the lawn of St. James AME Zion Church.
