Five local students named Wendy’s Heisman school winners
Five Darlington County School District student-athletes are 2015 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award school winners. The recognition highlights exceptional high school seniors and their achievements in the classroom, on the field and in the community.
Two students from Mayo High School for Math, Science & Technology are winners: Elizabeth Lawson and Frankie Johnson. Lawson plays tennis for Darlington High School, and Johnson plays basketball and football at Darlington High. Hartsville High School produced two school winners: Andrew Coker and Maya Murphy. Coker plays baseball for Hartsville, and Murphy is a cheerleader and member of the golf team. Bryant Huggins, who plays baseball, is a school winner for Darlington High School.
“It is an honor for our students to be recognized as well-rounded citizens who succeed in the classroom and beyond,” DCSD Superintendent Eddie Ingram said.
Student-athletes had to submit applications in order to be considered as a school winner, which is the first phase of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Awards. On Nov. 2, state finalists will be announced. Those finalists will be narrowed down to 10 national finalists, who will travel to New York City for the announcement of the two national winners, a female and a male.
Requirements included being a member of the graduating class of 2016, having a 3.0 GPA, participating in at least one of the 43 sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee or the National Federation of State High School Association, and being able to prove leadership in the community, according to Wendy’s.
Wendy’s, in partnership with the Heisman Trophy Trust, has recognized outstanding students-athletes with the awards for 22 years.
