Explore nature with experts at wildlife refuge

Spring has sprung at the Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge, and there are several opportunities to explore, learn, and connect with nature! Whether you’re hoping to spot rare birds, log some trail miles, or share unforgettable moments with family, we’ve got something for everyone.

BIRDING:  Whether you are a novice wildlife watcher or an experienced birder, these outings offer a fantastic opportunity to explore the refuge with Dr. Shaw Smolen Morton as your guide.

• Spring Migrants – Saturday, May 2, 2026, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Participants should meet in the refuge office parking lot and be prepared to caravan to several locations with some light walking.

• Nightjar Jaunt – Saturday, May 30, 2026, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Participants should meet at the refuge office and be prepared to caravan to the Oxpen area. Enjoy the evening chorus led by nightjars—nocturnal birds known for their vocalizations—along with owls, cicadas, and frogs! This outing offers a special opportunity to explore your national wildlife refuge in the twilight hours.

HIKING:  If you’re looking to put in some miles, check out these guided hikes that meet at Lake Bee Recreation Area, located 6 miles north of McBee on SC Hwy 145.

• Fields, Forests, and Footsteps with Dr. Austin Jenkins – Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 8:30 a.m.

Step into a vibrant world on this peaceful 2.6 mile journey through open fields and pine forests, where blooming goat’s rue and lupine frame habitats alive with Bachman’s sparrows and RCWs.

• Birds, Blooms, and Black Creek with Dr. Robert Carter – Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 8:30 a.m.

Immerse yourself in the beauty of Black Creek on this 3 mile spring hike, where upland pines, bottomland hardwoods, and managed fields showcase blooming mountain laurel and the chance to spot prothonotary warblers, bobwhite quail, and RCWs.
