DCBOE approves new school name

The Darlington County Board of Education approved the name “Black Creek Elementary School” for the new elementary school currently under construction in the Darlington area. The board made this decision during its regular monthly meeting on December 9, 2024.

To select the name, the school district sought suggestions from parents and employees of Rosenwald Elementary and St. John’s Elementary. From the list of suggestions, an ad hoc committee narrowed the options to five names, which the board reviewed during their last work session. The list was then further narrowed to two finalists: Black Creek Elementary School and North Darlington Elementary School.
The new school will combine the student populations of St. John’s Elementary School in Darlington and Rosenwald Elementary School in Society Hill. Located between North Governor Williams Highway and Leavensworth Road in Darlington, the facility is designed to serve approximately 670 students, with the capacity to expand to accommodate up to 800 students. The school is expected to open for the 2025-26 academic year.
