Darlington teen held in N.C. June slaying
A 17-year-old from Darlington is being held in the June 25 slaying of a gas-station employee in Star, N.C., officials said.
The victim, 53-year-old Laura Whitman, was working her first shift at a Quick Chek when an armed man tried to rob the store. Whitman surrendered the money, but the man jumped across the counter, shot her, stole more money and fled. He escaped with $96.
The unidentified teen-ager was to be transferred from Darlington to Montgomery County, N.C., and charged with first-degree murder in Whitman’s death, according to reports. He was already wanted on an attempted-murder charge in a June 5 incident, according to reports, but it wasn’t clear where that case took place.
