Building dedicated in memory of Chief Jim Stone

Dedication plaque on the “Our Pat” building honoring the late DFD Chief Jim Stone

On May 26, the City of Darlington, Darlington Fire Department, and the Stone family paid tribute to the late retired Chief Jim Stone by dedicating the Cashua Street building housing the “Our Pat” fire engine to Stone’s memory.

Speakers included City Council member John Segars, DFD Chief Pat Cavanaugh, Mayor Gloria Hines, County Coroner Todd Hardee, Pastor Brian Sherwood of First Baptist Church, and Jason Stone. Each shared memories of Chief Stone’s enduring love for his family, his hometown, and the fire service. Jason Stone presented his father’s fire helmet to Chief Cavanaugh, who then joined city manager Howard Garland to unveil a plaque summarizing Stone’s career and achievements.

Following the ceremony, guests retreated from the heat into the new Voter Registration building and enjoyed refreshments: cupcakes, boiled peanuts, and ice-cold Coca Cola – all favorites of Chief Stone.
