A lifelong Darlington resident who “excel(s) in team-building and leadership” has been chosen as the new president of the Greater Darlington Chamber of Commerce. Carla Elvington accepted the job Jan. 19, the chamber said. Elvington’s background is in retail management and customer service, which will “provide a much-needed boost to the organization,” the chamber said in a statement. Elvington, who will serve in a part-time capacity, replaces former chamber president Harriet Hobbs. “My door is always open and I want business owners to let us know how we can help,” said Elvington, who will work with businesses in Darlington, Lamar and Society Hill. Elvington has two daughters, Christen Parnell of Florence and Terilyn Odom of Darlington. She enjoys music, floral design, working out at Fitness World Gym and attending Darlington City Council meetings. (Although COVID concerns have currently closed City Council meetings to the public, they can be viewed online.) The chamber’s initiative for this year is “What can your chamber do for you?” The chamber said, “Rebuilding and establishing relationships will be paramount to the success of this initiative.” The chamber was first incorporated in 1929 and has served the community since 1936. “The Board of Directors of the Greater Darlington Chamber are confident the appointment of Carla Elvington as president will forward our mission to support and enhance our community,” Anna DeWitt, chairwoman of the chamber’s board, said in a statement. This year’s chamber banquet is set for March 18 at the Grand Old Post Office on Pearl Street, although chamber officials have said the date might change depending on whether the COVID situation worsens. For tickets or more on the banquet, e-mail information@darlingtonchamber.com or call Elvington at 843-393-2641.
