Clyde Mitchell “Mitch” Mims
Murrells Inlet/Darlington – Clyde Mitchell Mims, born September 30, 1953, went to be with Jesus after a courageous and admirable fight on February 23, 2022. Mitch was born in Darlington, SC, the son of the late Furman Joseph Mims and Mary Nanette Goodson. He graduated from Francis Marion College in 1975 where he played on the golf team and was in the Plywood Business for 20 years before purchasing a Wholesale Business on Pearl Street that the family operated. After the sale of the business he spent the remaining years in Real Estate ending with the Litchfield Company in Pawleys Island.
He was admired and loved by all who knew him. His infectious laugh was such a gift and his heart was more beautiful than words. His true legacy lies in the many lives he has touched along the way and especially the 500 young men he coached and mentored over the years. He coached Darlington to their first State Championship in Football in 1990 and again in 1992, and also a Championship in Basketball in 1990. The countless stories of how he helped others, in so many ways, is truly a gift. We are so proud.
Not only an incredible Coach, he was a die-hard Gamecock Fan and loved his days on the golf course. He enjoyed days on the beach with his family and boating with his Main Man, Chad.
He was the absolute Best Friend to be had, an incredible Daddy and Paw Paw, and an adoring Husband. Our children were and always will be so blessed to have had him as their Grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Donna James Mims, two children, Heather (Derrik) Gainey of Myrtle Beach, SC, Chad Mims of Murrell’s Inlet, SC; grandchildren, Samantha Odom, Brayden Mims, Demi Gainey, Shane Gainey, Mason Gainey and Blake Gainey; siblings: Robynn Taylor (Brad) of Stafford, VA.
A quote he gave to his players after winning the Championship in 92’. Life’s battles don’t always go to the stronger or faster man; but soon or late the man who wins is the man who thinks he can.
Memorial services will be held 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 3rd at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet, and 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 5th at Trinity United Methodist Church in Darlington, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
