Since February 2018, Police Chief Kelvin Washington has ably served the citizens of Darlington. With his upcoming retirement on December 31, 2022, the city launched a search for his replacement. Over 40 people applied, and with the help of a team of law enforcement personnel from across the state, and citizen input, Darlington County Sheriff’s Captain Mark Campbell has been chosen Police Chief.

According to Darlington City Manager John Payne, “Captain Campbell brings to the City of Darlington over 30 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, beginning with the United States Marine Corps Military Police. Following an honorable discharge, Captain Campbell served the Virginia State Police in numerous roles, from Trooper and Drug Enforcement Officer to Special Agent for the Gang Unit and Assistant Special Agent in Charge for the Drug Enforcement Division.”

Campbell came to Darlington in 2017 as Captain of the Sheriff’s Office Operations and now serves as commander of its Special Operations (SWAT) command. “Captain Campbell is a seasoned law enforcement professional with significant experience, from patrol to drugs and gangs, to SWAT. He is well qualified to serve our citizens and lead the fight against crime in the City of Darlington,” says Payne.

Captain Campbell and his family reside in Darlington County; he takes command on January 1, 2023.
