City of Darlington officials and community members united last week to celebrate the latest leg of the Trees on The Square beautification project, where 10 large pots containing trees and colorful pansies were installed on Cashua Street. Generous donations from local citizens and businesses helped fund these lovely additions, and they join the dozens of pots already adorning the Square and brightening the downtown area.
The driving force behind the project – the hardworking ladies of the Kalmia Garden Study Club – say that they’re not done yet. Six more trees will be planted along South Main Street, and Kalmia just received a $2,500 Palmetto Pride Community Pride Grant to install smaller pots along Pearl Street.
Kalmia Garden Study Club received statewide recognition for their work recently when The Garden Club of South Carolina, Inc. held their annual meeting in Bishopville and presented Kalmia with eight awards, including a First Place prize for the Trees on The Square project.
“It is wonderful to see the Darlington Beautification Project being recognized not only on a district level but on a state level as well,” said Kalmia president Ronda Brown, citing an excellent working relationship with City of Darlington officials and Beautification Board members as key to these successes.
