Humanitarian Award to Orlando Hudson
In a June 8 ceremony on the Public Square, Darlington native and Major League Baseball veteran Orlando Hudson was recognized for his longstanding charitable work with autistic youths.
Church of the Week: Mont Clare Community Center
If you thought this series of article is written about churches, it is- and this building does have religious significance. Other than the religious significance of this building, it also exemplifies what the yield can be when a community works together for a common good. Located at 1632 Mont Clare Road, it had its begin in 1933 by the citizens of the Mont Clare area of Darlington County. Their idea was to have a “community center” for the people to use, so the people banded together to build it.
Darlington County Education Foundation Awards Grants
Last week, as teachers with the Darlington County School District prepared to close up shop for the summer, several educators received delightful surprises as representatives of the Darlington County Education Foundation (DCEF) presented them with grant checks totaling almost $19,000.
Community and law enforcement talk at Town Hall meeting
Lawson Grove Baptist Church in the Oates community held a Darlington County Forum / Town Hall meeting on May 21, and the panel discussion focused on ways to improve relationships between law enforcement and the public.
DPD’s free SUV
City of Darlington Police Patrolman Benjamin Watford and Lt. Mike Cook recently showed off the department’s newest addition to the traffic enforcement fleet, a 2015 Ford Police Interceptor SUV, which cost DPD no money at all. Cook explains that the vehicle – along with two new in-car camera systems – were given to the department by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Network for fully participating in its DUI enforcement program. DPD was entered in a drawing for the SUV with two other departments from the Fourth Judicial Circuit, and luck was with Darlington. Fully kitted out for traffic enforcement and pursuit situations, the vehicle is worth about $45,000.
Falcons added pads in week three of spring practice
