A-Tax Committee reviews new applicants
The Darlington County Accommodations Tax Committee met on Thursday, March 17 to decide on funding recommendations for the 2016/17 fiscal year.

When Chip Helms turned over a patch of earth and found pieces of pottery and artifacts as a 14 year old in the mid 1970’s he had no idea that his discovery would inspire two decades of archaeological investigation at the Greet Pee Dee River Heritage Preserve in Darlington County.
The Johannes Kolb Archaeology and Education Project held their final Field Day on Saturday, March 12, 2016, marking the end of the project that has trained 15 student to professional archaeologists, recovered over 1.5 million artifacts, over 6,000 visitors, and excavating and curating samples that have yielded a greater knowledge of who lived at the site from Paleoindian period 12,000 – 8,000 BC to the Williamson Era in the 1800’s.
County Council quizzed on stormwater, mosquitoes, private roads
Darlington County Council heard about two recurring issues at their March 7 regular meeting: flooding in the South Hartsville area and the attendant mosquitoes produced by that standing water, and the persisting troubles with Lide Springs Road in the Mechanicsville community.
City celebrates award-winning Trees on the Square project
City of Darlington officials and community members united last week to celebrate the latest leg of the Trees on The Square beautification project, where 10 large pots containing trees and colorful pansies were installed on Cashua Street. Generous donations from local citizens and businesses helped fund these lovely additions, and they join the dozens of pots already adorning the Square and brightening the downtown area.
It Takes a Village to prevent child abuse
The Darlington Police Department, Darlington County Sheriff’s Office, and the Pee Dee Coalition Durant Children’s Center teamed up last week to offer an educative evening centered on child sexual abuse prevention, detection, and prosecution. The “It Takes a Village” program offered insight into the persistent problem of sexual exploitation of minors, and gave law enforcement officers and counselors a chance to share stories, insights and strategies with the public.
