August sworn in as Darlington County Sheriff

Before a crowd of more than 150 attendees at the Darlington County Courthouse on Tuesday night, Michael August officially assumed the role of Darlington County Sheriff. Joined by his wife and two daughters, August took the oath of office, vowing to uphold the law and serve the community with integrity.
The ceremony, presided over by Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee, highlighted August’s 30 years of law enforcement experience. Hardee commended the new sheriff as a dedicated public servant who has spent decades combating crime.
Former South Carolina Governor David Beasley was among the speakers who addressed the audience, offering praise for August and his family. Beasley acknowledged the new sheriff’s commitment to his role and expressed confidence in his ability to lead.
Following his swearing-in, August emphasized a vision for a proactive administration focused on community policing and crime reduction. “The Darlington County Sheriff’s Office will be a proactive administration and tough on crime,” he stated, a sentiment echoed in an official statement from the sheriff’s office.
August also swore in his command staff during the event, signaling the beginning of his leadership team’s efforts to fulfill these goals. His victory over former sheriff James Hudson, Jr. in November’s election marked a pivotal change in the county’s law enforcement leadership.
Community members and officials celebrated the occasion, offering congratulations and support for Sheriff August as he begins his tenure.
