Heterbring adds 14 to revived Field Hockey team
Coker College Head Women’s Field Hockey Coach Kat Heterbring has announced the signing of 14 new recruits to the 2018-19 field hockey team. This season marks the return of the field hockey program, which last participated as a Coker sponsored sport in 1977. Heterbring has inked an impressive collection of local and international recruits to help restart the program.
The full list of recruits includes Courtney Austin, Joevonna Barnwell, Alyssa Baronella-O’Toole, Payton Baronella-O’Toole, Kaleigh Cordrey, Simcha de Vilder, Carla Deuble, Skyler Earle, Amelia Gajewski, Kelsey Gibbons, Kiarra Rivera, Emily Saulino, Kelly Mason, and Victoria Watts.
“We are bringing in a great group of student-athletes to fill our first roster,” said Heterbring. “I’m confident this group of athletes will makes us competitive on the field and represent Coker well off the field.
The 14 recruits will compete against Belmont Abbey, Converse, Limestone, Newberry, and Queens in the inaugural season of SAC-Carolinas field hockey play. The Cobras will begin their season on Sept. 5 when they host Newberry at 4 p.m. on the Coker Athletic Field.
Austin played basketball, field hockey, softball, and lacrosse for Landsdowne High School in Halethorpe, Maryland. She’s the daughter of Tony and Kim Austin, and plans to major in criminal justice.
Barnwell played field hockey and ran track for Woonsocket High School in Rhode Island. Barnwell was a three-time all-star, and selected first-team all-division. She’s the daughter of Dawn Abney and plans to major in pre-med/nursing.
Sisters Alyssa and Payton Baronella-O’Toole will be transferring from Anne Arundel Community College where they both played lacrosse for the Riverhawks. Previously, they played field hockey at Old Mill High School in Severn, Maryland. They are the daughters of Gary and Amy O’Toole. Payton plans to major in biology.
Cordrey played field hockey at Indian River High School in Selbyville, Delaware. She was selected First-Team Henlopen South All-Conference in both her junior and senior seasons. She was a co-captain and the 2017 Most Valuable Player for her high school team. She’s the daughter of Keith and Rebecca Cordrey and plans to major in biology.
Deuble is coming to Hartsville from Ulm, Germany. She’s the daughter of Antje and Thomas Deuble and plans to major in business administration.
Earle played field hockey at Akron Central High School in Akron, New York. She was a member of the Niagara Orleans League Co-Champions. Earle was selected Second-Team All-League her senior season. Skyler is the daughter of William and Angela Earle.
Gajewski was captain and MVP of her high school field hockey team at Sacred Heart Academy. Prior to transferring to Coker, Gajewski played lacrosse at D’Youville College where she scored 10 goals and dished out seven assists in her sophomore season. She’s the daughter of Steve and Anne Marie Gajewski, and plans to major in psychology.
Gibbons played field hockey in addition to basketball and lacrosse at Cortland High School in New York. Gibbons was voted defensive player of the year and selected First-Team All-League. She’s the daughter of Michael and Michelina, and plans to major in chemistry.
Mason transfers from Wells College where she was selected to the NEAC All-Conference team for the second year in a row. Mason led her team with 16 points, scoring six goals and adding five assists for the season. She’s the daughter of James and Colleen Mason and plans to major in business.
Rivera played field hockey at Central York High School in York, Pennsylvania. She is the daughter of Josue and Melissa Rivera, and plans to major in elementary and childhood education.
Saulino attended Easton High School in Easton, Pennsylvania where she played field hockey for the Patriots. Emily was a four-year letter winner, a two-time offensive MVP, and was given the Clifford E. Steinbach Award. She’s the daughter of Kenneth and Irene Saulino, and she plans to major in biochemistry.
de Vilder attended Fons Vitae Lyceum in Amstelveen, Noord-Holland where she played field hockey and tennis. Simcha is the daughter of Ronald de Vilder and Daphne Kellerman.
Watts attended Patrick Henry High School where she played basketball, track & field, and field hockey for the Patriots. Off the field, Watts was a member of the Beta Club, DECA, Varsity Club, and Key Club. The Montpelier, Virginia native plans to major in biology at Coker. She is the daughter of William and Karen Watts.
