Darlington Anchors and Pilots attend state convention

Ten Anchors and six Pilots from Darlington travelled to Conway for the Anchor District Convention on Saturday, February 24. They joined Anchors from across South Carolina for their annual meeting hosted this year by the Anchor Clubs of Carolina Forest High School and Conway High School.

Anchors attending included Kamryn Aldrich, Courtney Gibson, Olivia Vacanti, Kaitlyn Westbrook, Carrie Price Flowers, Caroline Floyd, Lauren McLennan, Logan Reynolds, Claire McLennan, and Tanner Berry. Pilots included Angie Doriety, Brenda Tiller, Melissa Schwier, Mary Schwier, Ginger Ridgill, Mary Scott, and co-Pilot, Bill Dority. All Darlington attendees wore t-shirts designed by the Anchors themselves, which featured an anchor with pearls intertwined depicting Darlington, the Pearl of the Pee Dee.

Not only did the Anchors get to interact with young people from across the state but they also heard messages from several speakers. Merrily Burns, Pilot International’s ECR this year from Hawaii, was complimentary and encouraging to the Anchors. A local police officer shared cautions about using social media and a local youth pastor shared important points for a successful transition into adulthood.

At the Anchor Convention there is always a project for the members to take part in for the good of the host community. This time Anchors brought non-perishable food items for a food pantry in Conway and packed them in bags for later delivery. The convention ended with a guided walking tour of downtown Conway.
