County schools give out ‘grades that lie’

Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy are among the “little” lies we tell our children.

It is not done in a necessarily deceptive way, but to bring a little happiness to their lives.

In this case it seems harmless until reality steps in and truth becomes known.

At that time there is disappointment and maybe some pain, but nothing that will irreparably alter their future.

However, there is a lie that we tell our children who attend the public-school system in Darlington County and we have made the teacher the arbiter of it — and that is the 50-point rule.

No student can be awarded a score on an assignment that is lower than 50.

Now, unlike the little white lies about Santa, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy, this lie will irreparably alter the future of a child.

What child can expect academic success if they are not properly educated and giving grades that lie does them a great disservice.

Have we lost our minds to think such a policy would produce anything but the abysmal score they receive on standardized tests?

It seems the Darlington County School Board wants to see our children achieve only at the 50th percentile in education — a factor that will affect our children for life.
