Women’s team ranks 3rd in USTA National Tournament

The Smiling Seniors from the Mt. Pleasant Recreation League came in 3rd in the USTA National Tournament held in Surprise, Arizona, October 23-25. The team finished their local season with a 10-2 record, came in first in the State with a 5-0 record, then won Sectionals in Asheville, N.C. with a 5-0 record. The team is comprised of 55s at the 4.0 level.
In Arizona, the team beat Albany, NY, 2-1, Kansas City 2-1, and lost to Puerto Rico 2-1. Knowing that we had to win all 3 matches to advance to the semi finals, the Smiling Seniors advanced on with a 3-0 win over Virginia Beach to reach the semi finals, yet lost to the San Diego team, 2-1.
In the match for 3rd place, played right after the semi finals, the team won 2-1 over Stamford, CT.
“I grew up in Darlington and wanted family and friends to see this,” said Williamson. “It was like a once in a lifetime event for us.”
