Williamson to be honored before BBQ/Bog Benefit

The Williamson Park Committee will honor the memory of Ben Williamson with a memorial tree planting at 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Williamson Park in Darlington.
Liz Gillard of TreeSC will donate a Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor) to be planted in a meaningful spot within the park. The tree will replace one that fell just days before Ben Williamson and his wife passed away, making the planting a poignant tribute to their legacy.
The oak symbolizes remembrance, renewal, and the enduring connection between the Williamson family and the park that bears their name. The committee hopes it will stand for the next 100 years, providing shade and supporting wildlife.
“This planting is about honoring the past while investing in the future,” Carroll said. “As we approach Williamson Park’s 100-year celebration, we hope this Swamp White Oak will stand as a living memorial to Ben Williamson for generations to come.”
The planting is especially significant as the park nears its 100th anniversary in 2028. For nearly a century, it has served as a natural refuge for the Darlington community, offering woodland trails and a place to appreciate green space. The committee continues to preserve the park’s woodlands and maintain its trails for future generations.
Following the planting, the committee will host its annual BBQ & Bog Benefit from 6 to 10 p.m. The fundraiser will feature barbecue, drinks, desserts, and music, with 100% of proceeds benefiting the park’s preservation and improvement.
Community members are encouraged to attend both events. Tickets and “I Love Williamson Park” T-shirts are available online, and donations are welcome from those who cannot attend. Details are available at https://www.zeffy.com/…/williamson-park-bbq-and-bog…
