Weekend crackdown results in 18 arrests

A weekend crackdown by the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office, State Law Enforcement Division and state parole officers resulted in 18 arrests in the county, officials said. The crackdown was conducted Nov. 19-21, said sheriff’s Maj. David Young. The operation – formally known as a Proactive Community Enforcement Operation – was intended to “help reduce and deter criminal activity,” Young said in a statement. “These agencies came together, and through a joint effort, worked several different areas of Darlington County to include specific areas that have recently had criminal activity reported,” Young said. Eighteen people were arrested in the crackdown, but their names and the charges they face were not immediately available. Officers also issued 67 citations during the crackdown, found eight narcotics violations and seized four firearms, Young said. He said the Sheriff’s Office plans to continue these types of operations. The Nov. 19-21 crackdown was one of several conducted this year, Young said, and each has been “very successful.” — Bobby Bryant
