On Thursday, December 19th, the Society Hill Town Council convened a special meeting to finalize the allocation of remaining American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. The council unanimously approved a series of expenditures designed to enhance public safety, preserve historical authenticity, and improve town facilities.

The council voted to allocate $13,300 for the purchase and installation of two Flock Safety Cameras. The expenditure includes a one-year comprehensive service plan covering 24/7 maintenance, repair, and replacement. After the first year, ongoing maintenance will cost $3,000 per camera annually, ensuring continued functionality and security for the town.

To maintain the historical integrity of the 1822 Library, the council approved $2,900 for the installation of a historically authentic door. This project includes hinges and hardware that are faithful reproductions of the period, blending functionality with preservation.

Council members also prioritized community spaces with several key approvals:

Playground Upgrades: Up to $60,000 was allocated for renovations, equipment replacement, and the installation of an irrigation system at the Town Hall playground.

Picnic Pavilion: The council voted to spend $380 for faucet replacement at the picnic pavilion.

Depot Restoration: To address safety and aesthetic concerns, $1,300 was approved for the replacement of damaged or missing spindles and rails at the Depot. The project will include staining all railings with two coats to ensure uniformity and durability.

Boat Landing Maintenance: A budget of $1,350 was allocated for pressure washing the boat landing to improve its appearance and accessibility.

Lighting Replacement: The council approved $370 to replace outdated or damaged lighting fixtures at Town Hall.

Recognizing the need to enhance the town’s public spaces, the council also allocated $2,387.70 for the purchase of 12 metal garden benches to replace aging ones around town.
