COLUMBIA, S.C. – State legislators honored the Lamar High School football team Thursday at the S.C. Statehouse for winning the 2015 Class A Division II state championship.

Speaker of the House Jay Lucas introduced the team, coaches and school administrators and invited them down to the floor of the House of Representatives.

“I can tell you, there’s something in the water in Darlington County,” Lucas said. “I want to congratulate Coach (Corey) Fountain. This is an outstanding football team. We’re so excited to have you young men on the floor and congratulate you on this state championship.”

In December, the Silver Foxes defeated C.E. Murray High School, 28-0, at Benedict College Stadium to clinch the school’s fourth state football title. Lamar finished the season with an 11-3 record.

Other Darlington County representatives – Rep. Robert Williams, Rep. Patricia Henegan and Rep. Phillip Lowe – also honored the Silver Foxes during the ceremony.

“It’s an amazing accomplishment,” Lowe said. “We are so proud of Lamar and what they have done. We really appreciate all of the effort that you guys had for this state championship.”

The House passed Resolution H.5265 on April 26, officially recognizing the team and its accomplishment.

The Silver Foxes racked up nearly 400 yards of offense during the state title, while giving up less than 100 yards on defense. The championship marked Lamar’s first since 2004.
