Each spring, the South Carolina DECA chapter hosts its annual Career Development Conference in Charleston, SC. The conference agenda keeps students quite busy as they are expected to attend meetings, participate in workshops, elect officers, visit exhibit booths and compete for an opportunity to represent the state of South Carolina at the international DECA conference in April.

Students have to take an objective test on-line and participate in a role playing situation related to their event. Advance preparation at the school level includes taking paper and computer tests, completing class assignments, and participating in role playing situations with peers, staff, and volunteers from the community. This year, approximately 600 students competed at the state conference. Only students placing in the top ten were recognized with a certificate and medallion during the awards banquet.

Mrs. Pamela Smith and Ms. Latrica Jackson serve as the DECA advisors at the Darlington County Institute of Technology (DCIT). Mrs. Smith teaches Marketing and Accounting. Ms. Jackson teaches Professional and Leadership Development, Entrepreneurship, and Finance. Most of these classes are dual credit or articulated with Florence-Darlington Technical College. The following students from DCIT were recognized for placing in their respective event:

DHS – Sandra Hammons – Personal Selling Presentation – 1st place
DHS – Jada Zimmerman – Retail Merchandising – Top Ten
HHS – Jared Martrano – Food Marketing Management– Top Ten
HHS – Hunter Purvis – Marketing Management – Top Ten
MHS – Cindy Martinez – Principals of Business Administration – Top Ten

Sandra Hammons, who placed 1st at the state DECA conference, is invited to participate in the International DECA Career and Development Conference which will be held in Nashville, TN on April 23 – April 26 2016. Over 18,000 students, advisors, and business leaders are expected to attend the International DECA Career and Development Conference.
