Local student take top honors at regional science fair

Students in the engineering classes at the Darlington County Institute of Technology (DCIT) are not only preparing for college and future careers but are learning how to ensure that our buildings, towers, and cranes will be well built. Instructor Dan Woods provides his engineering students with an opportunity to learn and apply the concepts necessary to build stable structures. Though each student in the class built individual projects, students spend time learning to work collaboratively.

Each year, Woods enters several of his students in the Sandhills Regional Science Fair held at Francis Marion University. These students compete against other high school teams in the Pee Dee region including several teams from Myrtle Beach, Hartsville, Florence and Darlington. At the conclusion of the science fair, students are honored at a ceremony and receive a medallion. Darlington County Institute of Technology students represented the school well and received the following recognitions during the ceremony:

• 1st Place Engineering (Gold Medal): Demeatrius Gilbert (DHS)
• 1st Place Physics (Gold Medal): Tyquavion Stevenson (MHS)
• 1st Place Team (Gold Medals): Trey Kelley (HHS), Aaron Melton (HHS), Connor Hogan (MHS)

The Sand Hills Region IV Science Fair is a preliminary competition to determination eligibility for participation in the Intel International Science Fair program. Millions of students compete at the local level and over 1500 high school students compete at the international level. They represent nearly 70 countries, regions, and territories. There are opportunities to win over $3 million in scholarships and prizes. This event was created by the Society for Science & the Public in 1950.
