LETTER TO EDITOR: Reader expresses concern over Darlington City Council meetings

Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the deteriorating state of governance within the Darlington City Council. As a citizen who has witnessed firsthand the dysfunction currently plaguing our local government, I feel compelled to speak out.
Over the past year, City Council meetings have increasingly devolved into theatrical displays of unprofessionalism that serve neither our community nor the democratic process. What should be productive sessions focused on addressing our city’s needs have instead become forums for personal attacks, baseless accusations, and constant disruptive behavior from some councilmembers.
The spectacle of elected leaders shouting over one another, leveling charges of racism and misconduct without any substantiation, engaging in petty disputes and outright lies has transformed what should be dignified public discourse into an embarrassing circus. The lack of preparation among certain council members is particularly troubling. I have personally attended multiple specially-called meetings lasting two full hours where absolutely nothing of substance was accomplished. During these sessions, some councilmembers have openly admitted to not understanding the agenda items, asking “What are we talking about here?” in the middle of proceedings. This level of unpreparedness is not only disrespectful to fellow council members but represents a fundamental breach of the public trust.
The issue extends beyond poor preparation to basic meeting materials distribution. When councilmembers report receiving critical information on the very day of the meetings, it becomes impossible for them to read over the material and make informed decisions on behalf of the public. The best practices in municipal governance require that meeting materials be distributed three to five days in advance, allowing adequate time for review and consideration. This is not an unreasonable standard—it is a fundamental requirement for responsible governance.
Perhaps most concerning is the apparent lack of basic courtesy and respect during council proceedings. When certain members refuse to listen to their colleagues, speak out of turn, and then demand absolute attention when it is their time to speak, they demonstrate a troubling double standard that undermines the collaborative spirit essential to effective local government. This behavior has already created an atmosphere of palpable extreme hostility which makes productive dialogue virtually impossible. I would say it is reminiscent of uncontrollable elementary children on a playground but, I would hate to cause unjust offense to innocent children.
The citizens of Darlington deserve better than this dysfunctional disaster. We deserve elected officials who come fully prepared for meetings, who treat one another with respect, and who focus their energy on solving our community’s challenges rather than creating new controversies.
We need council members who understand that effective governance requires compromise, collaboration, and a genuine commitment to serving the public interest above their own selfish personal agendas. This is not about partisan politics or ideological differences—this is about basic professional competence and civic responsibility.
Our city faces real challenges that require thoughtful deliberation and unified action. We cannot afford to have our local government paralyzed by infighting and grandstanding.
I call upon all members of the Darlington City Council to recommit themselves to the principles of good governance: preparation, professionalism, mutual respect, and collaborative problem-solving. The people of Darlington have placed their trust in you to lead our community forward, not to engage in this destructive political theater.
Furthermore, I urge my fellow citizens to remain engaged in the democratic process. Attend council meetings, hold our elected officials accountable, and demand the level of professionalism and competence that our community deserves. Only through active civic participation can we ensure that our local government serves the people effectively.
The time for excuses and dysfunction has passed. Darlington’s future depends on having a city council that works together constructively to address our shared challenges. Our community deserves nothing less than elected officials who are prepared, professional, and committed to collaborative governance. There is an election this fall. I hope each and every citizen of Darlington will seriously take all of this into consideration when choosing your candidate.
WE have the power to stop this. If councilmembers won’t straighten up their act and stop being just an obstacle to progress, WE as voters can make sure any obstacles are removed.
