Legislative Happenings
A message from Senator Gerald Malloy, District 29- Darlington, Chesterfield, Lee and Marlboro Counties
Dear Friends and Constituents,
The Senate Finance Committee continued work on the state budget this week. The Senate limited time in statewide session in order to allow the Committee to work. Among other things, the Committee has included $4 billion to replace bridges, repair pavement and to widen interstates. At the time of the publication of this newsletter, Committee work is continuing.
Governor Haley signed several bills into law, including some that I originally sponsored and supported – H.3265, enacting Ronald Rouse’s Law, requiring that students receive instruction in CPR and awareness in use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), at least once during the four years of grades nine through twelve.
Also signed into law were H.3545, relating to the degrees of arson and making revisions to the 2010 Omnibus Crime Act, and H.3325, enacting the “Clementa C. Pinckney Uniform Partition of Heirs Act.”
With the May 1st “crossover” legislative deadline approaching, there are still many bills pending on the Calendar. The Farm Aid Fund, animal welfare, road funding, alimony reform and ethics are just a few left to be considered. Ethics Reform bills, H.3186 and H.3184, are pending in priority status on the Calendar and are expected to be debated next week. H.4717, a bill providing $40 million to farmers who can verify agricultural losses after October’s flooding, is up for second reading.
