In a major win for local conservatives, Darlington County Council Chairman Bobby Hudson (District 4) has officially announced his decision to switch to the Republican Party. With his announcement, Republicans now hold a majority on the Darlington County Council.
South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Drew McKissick released the following statement:
“We are thrilled to welcome Chairman Bobby Hudson to the Republican Party. His decision is further proof of the momentum we’re seeing in the Pee Dee and across South Carolina, as more conservative leaders reject the radical direction of the Democrat Party and align themselves with the values of the GOP.”
Following his decision, Chairman Hudson stated, “After years of identifying as a Democrat, I’ve decided to join the Republican Party. Over time, I’ve seen the Democratic Party move further away from the values that once drew me in. I believe in limited government, individual responsibility, and policies that strengthen economic opportunity for all people of Darlington County. My priority has never been party politics – it has always been serving the people of this community. The Republican Party today better reflects the direction I want to see for our future, and that’s why I’m proud to make this change.”
Hudson’s official party switch took place at a public event on Thursday, August 29th in Lamar, marking a pivotal moment in Darlington County politics and underscoring the growing strength of the Republican Party across the region.
Chairman Bobby Hudson was joined by Solicitor Mike Burch, County Council Member Angie Stone Godbold, County Treasurer Jeff Robinson, State Representative Cody Mitchell, State Senator J.D. Chaplin, SCGOP Chairman Drew McKissick, County Coroner Todd Hardee, Darlington County Sheriff Michael August, Clerk of Court Scott B. Suggs, County Auditor Angie Suggs, and County Council Member Kirk Askins.
The South Carolina Republican Party commended Chairman Hudson for his principled leadership and proudly welcomed him to the GOP.
