On Tuesday, July 23, the Hartsville City Council convened to discuss several significant matters concerning the community. The meeting culminated in the approval of three resolutions, addressing both historical preservation and animal welfare in the city.

The council unanimously passed Resolution 07-24-06, awarding a bid to Southern Vistas, Inc. for the restoration and preservation of the historic Marion Avenue Cemetery. The project, valued at $357,233, aims to maintain the cultural heritage of Hartsville by preserving this important landmark. Southern Vistas, Inc., known for its expertise in historic restoration, will undertake the work to ensure the cemetery is preserved for future generations.

In a continuation of efforts to enhance local cemeteries, the council approved Resolution 07-24-07, granting Southern Vistas, Inc. a contract for construction work at Greenlawn Cemetery. The project, costing $184,839, will involve significant improvements and maintenance work to ensure the cemetery remains a dignified resting place. The decision reflects the city’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing its public spaces.

Resolution 07-24-08 is a crucial step in supporting animal welfare in Hartsville. The City Council approved a collaborative agreement with the Darlington County Humane Society (DCHS) for animal shelter services. This agreement follows the city’s previous allocation of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to support the construction of a new animal shelter in Hartsville. Under this agreement, the city will reimburse DCHS up to $60,000 for providing animal shelter services. This financial assistance aims to ensure the continued care and management of stray and abandoned animals in the area.
