GSSM victorious at History Bee & Bowl State Championships
The Eagles successfully defended their state team title after the Governor’s School for Science and Math in Hartsville’s Team A went undefeated against some tough competition in the South Carolina History Bee & Bowl State Championship.
GSSM has held the title since 2020.
The Feb. 5 win secures GSSM’s spot in this year’s National History Bee in April. It affirms the school’s qualifications to compete in the 4th International History Olympiad this summer at Princeton University.
GSSM Team A went undefeated in six rounds against Cardinal Newman High School, Southside High School, First Presbyterian Academy and the Coastal Leadership Academy.
In addition to team honors, several GSSM students distinguished themselves, with some advancing to national competitions.
Senior Steven Insignares earned the second-place silver medal in the History Bee competition, and senior William Ostergaard finished in fourth. Insignares and Ostergaard have qualified for the National History Bee in April. Insignares also earned a spot in the International History Bee this summer.
Insignares and junior William Goldstein finished third and second, respectively, in the geography exam portion of the competition, earning each a spot in the National U.S. Geography Championships.
In the U.S. History exam, junior Briggs Murray earned the highest exam score of the day (across all categories), finishing first, and junior Elliott Lewis garnered third. Briggs and Elliott have both qualified for the U.S. History Bee. Three govies swept the Science exam portion of the competition, with Insignares, Lewis, and junior Lauren Hattan taking the top three spots. All three earned spots in the National Science Bee.
