Free medical and dental screenings available for veterans

CareSouth Carolina and the CareFIRST Carolina Foundation are offering free medical and dental screenings for veterans during the inaugural “Stand Up for Veterans” event scheduled Nov. 17.

This regional event will be held at CareSouth Carolina’s Hartsville medical center at 1268 South Fourth St. Veterans in CareSouth Carolina’s service area of Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Lee and Marlboro counties and surrounding areas are encouraged to participate.

The event is open to all honorably discharged veterans and limited office visits are available so pre-registration is necessary.

Both medical and dental appointments can be made by calling CareSouth Carolina at 843-332-3422 (ask for veterans event) or online at www.caresouth-carolina.com/patients/become-a-patient. Deadline for registration is Nov. 14. Participants will need to present a copy of their DD-214 discharge paper (DD-256 for reserve members, NGB22 for National Guard members) and a veterans driver’s license will also be accepted.

The goal is to schedule 200 medical/dental visits for local veterans who have trouble receiving the care they need. Services will be provided at no cost to them. Services to be provided include ear and eye exams, blood sugar testing, oxygen level testing, blood pressure reading and hemoglobin (HA1C) screening with other services available as needed.

Dental services will evaluate pain and need level with same day treatment available.

The community is asked to help inform area veterans of this special event and to also consider helping sponsor the services. The Hartsville United Way is a Title Sponsor for the event with Sandhills Telephone Cooperative being a Partner Sponsor. For more information on “Stand Up for Veterans” or to learn how you or your church, service organization or business might make a donation to sponsor a veteran, call 843-857-0111, ext. 1446.
