For its 150th birthday, Lamar plans 9 months of celebrations

This year marks the Town of Lamar’s 150th anniversary, and town officials are planning to celebrate nearly all year long.
Lamar is planning a series of nine monthly events, starting April 3 with a Community Sesquicentennial Worship Service at Lamar High School Gym at 3 p.m.
An event is planned each month after that for the rest of the year, although times and dates have not yet been set. Each event will focus on a different topic.
A tentative list is: May, first responders; June, political servants; July, the military; August, sports; September, pictorial/oral histories; October, medical; November, education; December, Christmas on Main.
Organizers said: “Lamar looks forward to this year to commemorate, educate and celebrate its town, as well as sharing retrospectives about the ‘Small Town with a Big Vision,’ its motto.”
The April 3 kickoff event centers on “praise and worship,” which organizers say “have always been an integral part of Lamar’s fiber.” The event will feature speakers “who have walked the streets and attended the schools” of Lamar. The Community Choir will also perform.
Lamar, once known as Mims Crossroads and later as Lisbon, was identified as a town in 1872 and was chartered in 1890 as Lamar.
