Driver flees South Main Street traffic stop, crashes into oncoming vehicle

A driver who’d been pulled over Friday by Darlington police suddenly drove off, veering into the path of an oncoming vehicle and causing a collision that sent the other driver to the hospital.

Capt. Kimberly Nelson of the Darlington Police Department said the incident started shortly after noon Sept. 20, when a Darlington officer did a traffic stop on South Main Street and Jessamine Street.

The driver had stopped as expected, Nelson said, but when the officer approached the vehicle, he “attempted to drive off.”

The fleeing driver turned right into the path of an oncoming vehicle and slammed into that other vehicle. A witness told local news media that police caught the suspect when he tried to run away.

His name was not immediately available.

Nelson said the person driving the other vehicle was taken to an area hospital, but only suffered “minor” injuries.
