Dr. Theresa Phillips

Dr. Theresa Phillips, age 99, passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2023. A graveside service was held on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at 4:00pm in Grove Hill Cemetery, with a visitation following the service. She lay-in-state at Belk Funeral Home from 12-3pm on Wednesday, for friends who wish to drop by.

Theresa was born in Charleston County on January 29, 1923. She is the daughter of the late Simeon King and Dora Jones King. Mrs. Phillips graduated from Coker College and The University of South Carolina where she received her PhD. She then worked in the school system as a guidance counselor and school psychologist. She was a talented athlete in high school and continued playing tennis throughout her life, even winning medals in the Senior Olympics in Niagara Falls. Theresa was active in the senior community and the First Baptist Church of Darlington where she sang in the choir for many years.

Theresa is survived by her daughter, Sandra Campbell of Darlington, grandchildren: Jimmie Phillips, Joey (Julie) Phillips, Page (Scott) Willis, Suzy Campbell, Shaye (William) Guffey, great-grandchildren, Hoban Phillips, Harrison Willis, Caroline Willis, Brody Phillips, Abby Grace Phillips, James Mann, Isabella Guffey, daughter-in-law, Deborah Phillips, and Scott Hood.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Manuel James Phillips, son, Jimmie Phillips, grandchildren, Lisbeth Hood and Jimmie Campbell, great-grandchild, Lloyd Guffey.
