On Friday, the Lower Richland Diamond Hornets visited the Darlington Falcons for another varsity basketball double-header. In the first meeting earlier in the season, the Diamond Hornets were able to sweep the Falcons’ boys and girls teams. In this meeting, the Falcons’ were out for revenge against their regional opponent.

GIRLS GAME:

This game began with both teams seeming very evenly matched. Although Lower Richland went on a scoring run towards the end of the quarter, the Lady Falcons still managed to out score the Diamond Hornets 10-8 in the first. Within the second quarter of play, the Diamond Hornets continued their scoring run but the Lady Falcons kept the game close after a key timeout. Heading into halftime, the score was 24-22 in favor of Lower Richland, however the game got away from the Lady Falcons in the third quarter as the Diamond Hornets outscored them and maintained a 40-24 lead heading into the final quarter of play. Lower Richland would go onto win this game 53-35 as the Lady Falcons had an unusual off night. Turnovers were the main problem as the Diamond Hornets racked up 16 total steals against Darlington. The now 11-7 Lady Falcons will look to end their current 3 game losing streak by facing the 8-10 Lakewood Gators next.

BOYS GAME:

Earlier this season, Lower Richland defeated Darlington in blowout fashion with a 42-28 victory. Tensions were definitely high as the two teams faced off once again. The game ended up being a low scoring affair as the Diamond Hornets were only up 18-17 going into the 4th quarter. Regardless, the Falcons were able to walk away with the win after a hard fought battle defeating the Diamond Hornets 31-30. The now 12-7 Falcons will look for another victory against the 11-8 Lakewood Gators, who are one place above Darlington in region rankings.
