Cooks for Christ holds chicken bog benefit

James (Ed) Nealey was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 1998. He underwent quadruple bypass surgery shortly thereafter. In 2013, he had a heart catheterization and was advised that all his arteries were blocked. A defibrillator was inserted the next morning in hopes he would survive the trip to Charleston to determine if he was a candidate for a heart transplant.

However, it was determined he was not a candidate due to numerous other health problems. A LVAD (left ventricle access device) was implanted in March 2014 and Ed remained in Charleston for a month. He has fallen numerous times and suffered a brain bleed as well as an infection in the heart pump. Due to a fever of 106, he will remain on antibiotics for the rest of his life. Ed will continue to travel back and forth to Charleston for the remainder of his life.

Cooks for Christ is raising funds to help with hospital stays, travel expenses, the cost of weekly and bi-weekly lab bills, blood thinners to keep his pump working and the many prescriptions needed on a daily basis.

Ed’s benefit will be held on Thursday March 9 at the West Florence Fire Station on Pine Needles Road in Florence. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. Drive through lanes will be open for your convenience and a bake sale will be held all day. Plates are $7 each and can be delivered for orders of seven plates or more.
