Coker opens Excellence in Teaching Scholarship applications for Summer 2019 M. Ed. Cohorts

Coker College is now accepting applications for its Excellence in Teaching Scholarship for summer 2019, open to all educators in South Carolina who have been named Teacher of the Year and wish to pursue a Master’s of Education at Coker College. Coker offers two M.Ed. programs, both of which are entirely online programs –– the Master of Education in Literacy Studies and Master of Education in Curriculum and Instructional Technology.

The scholarship applies to all past and current Teachers of the Year at the state, district, or school level. Two outstanding Teachers of the Year will receive a full scholarship for their Master of Education at Coker College (one teacher will be selected for each M.Ed. program), a cost savings of over $15,000. All eligible applications will receive full funding for one term of graduate coursework (applies to the final term of the program), a cost savings of over $1,500.

The Master of Education in Literacy Studies at Coker was developed in response to the needs of S.C. teachers and is now an entirely online degree program. This course of study can be completed in 11 six-week terms, allowing full-time teachers to work while earning their master’s degree. Graduates will qualify for the South Carolina Department of Education’s Literacy Teacher add-on certification, which will qualify them for advanced positions.

The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instructional Technology degree is designed to provide educators and professionals with an expertise in digital-age learning and prepare them for work in a wide variety of subject areas. This course of study can be completed in 10 six-week terms, allowing full-time teachers to work while earning their master’s degree.

Karen Carpenter, Dean of the Wiggins School of Education, says the scholarships are important for recognizing great educators in South Carolina, “The Excellence in Teaching scholarship was designed to honor and recognize teachers’ commitment and passion for teaching and learning. This scholarship was founded on the belief that dedicated and innovative teachers should be recognized and provides the opportunity for Coker College to give back to the community.”

The M.Ed. terms begin in June 2019 and scholarship applications are due by May 1, 2019.
