City of Darlington gives update on water/sewer projects
The City of Darlington is making significant progress on multiple sewer infrastructure projects aimed at improving wastewater management and upgrading aging systems. Funded through a combination of South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority (SC RIA) SCIIP grants and the City’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, these projects include sewer line replacements, pump station renovations, and major upgrades across the city.
Recently, the City of Darlington published their monthly update to the public, which includes the following projects:
Coker Street Gravity Sewer Line Replacement
The Coker Street gravity sewer line has been successfully replaced. With underground work complete, road repairs are expected to follow soon, restoring the area to normal conditions.
S. Main Street & E. Broad Street Sewer Upgrades
All major construction work on sewer upgrades at South Main Street and East Broad Street has been completed. Only minor punch list items remain, which will be addressed shortly.
Highway 34 Sewer Pump Station (McLeod Health)
The project installs a new sewer pump station at the McLeod Health facility on Highway 34, along with a new force main sanitary sewer line that was bored under Black Creek, just north of the bridge. Frank Horne Construction, Inc. led the construction efforts, with Davis & Brown serving as the City Engineers. The project was funded by an SC RIA SCIIP Grant and ARPA funds from the City of Darlington.
As of now, all major construction has been completed, and electrical power has been connected by MDM Electric Cooperative. The City is awaiting the startup test before moving forward with final punch list items.
City of Darlington Sewer Pump Station Renovations
A large-scale rehabilitation project is underway to modernize several of the city’s sewer pump stations. This includes upgrading safety systems, monitoring equipment, plumbing, pumps, and electronic controls. The project is supported by SC RIA SCIIP funds and City of Darlington ARPA funds.
Davis & Brown were awarded the engineering contract in April 2024, with bidding closing on May 30, 2024. Evans Pavement, Inc. won the contract with a bid of $1,201,227. The city has received approvals for plans and specifications, and construction is scheduled for completion by April 2025.
The contractor has finalized the construction schedule and is conducting inspections alongside subcontractors. Mobilization is underway, and construction has officially begun.
