Surrounded by generations of family and a lifetime’s worth of friendships, Janice Newsome Flowers marked her 90th birthday in style on August 27, as loved ones packed the Purple Fish Coffee Company on West Hampton Street to honor nine decades of a life well lived.

The celebration came just ahead of her actual birthday on September 4, but for those gathered, the timing mattered far less than the moment — a chance to sit together, swap stories, and celebrate a woman whose presence has touched so many lives across Darlington and beyond.

Guests filled the cozy coffee shop with laughter, warm conversation, and no shortage of well wishes for the guest of honor. Family members gathered for the occasion, and friends old and new stopped by to pay tribute to a woman known for her warmth, her faith, and her enduring spirit.

Reflecting on the milestone, Flowers offered words that captured the heart of the day.

“I am so thankful to be here,” she said. “God is good.”

It was a simple statement, but one that spoke volumes — a reflection of the gratitude and grace that friends say have defined her for as long as they’ve known her.

Ninety years is no small feat, and for Janice Newsome Flowers, it’s a birthday made all the sweeter by the community that showed up to celebrate it with her. As she begins her tenth decade, those closest to her say one thing is certain: her light — and her faith — show no signs of dimming.

Happy 90th birthday, Janice Newsome Flowers!
