Barbara Cullum Spencer

Barbara Cullum Spencer, age 80 passed away Monday, November 21, 2016 at Florida Hospital Flagler, Florida. Funeral services were directed by Craig Flagler Palms Funeral Home in Palm Coast, Florida.

Born Nov 5th, 1936, Barbara was the daughter of the late Bertram L. Cullum and Jeanette Cullum Prosser of Darlington. Barbara was a graduate of Saint John’s High School of Darlington, South Carolina. She began her college education at Flora MacDonald Women’s College in Red Springs North Carolina where she met her husband Gary D. Spencer, a paratrooper with the 52nd Airborne, stationed at Fort Bragg North Carolina during the Korean War. She married and completed her college education at Arizona State University.

Barbara worked as a high school English teacher in Phoenix, Arizona, a Social Worker in Patterson, New Jersey, and finally as an Administrator for Embry Riddle Aeronautical University where she retired with 25 years of service. Barbara was a biblical scholar and a devoted mother. She enjoyed reading, cooking and watching television- and she was a big fan of the Florida Gators, especially Tim Tebow. She was also a devoted fan of Steve Spurrier and the Carolina Gamecocks.

Surviving are her daughter, Janet S Goff of Palm Coast, Florida; sons Dr. Dale C. Spencer of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Donald E. Spencer of Huntsville. Alabama; her grandchildren, Karen and Jenna Goff, and Gracie and Drew Spencer; and her two great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death is her father Bertram L. Cullum of Darlington, a loving father and decorated officer from the Pacific Theater of WW II; beloved mother Jeanette Cullum Prosser of Darlington who owned and managed a custom drapery business in Darlington for more than 30 years; brother Larry Cullum, who died in a tragic automobile accident returning home from graduation at the University of South Carolina; and stepfather, the late Jesse Odell Prosser of Darlington. Odell served the U.S. military during WW II. He was a respected member of the Darlington community where he served as a Deacon of the First Baptist Church for more than a decade. He was retired from Darlington’s Armory Wholesale where he worked for 40 years.

An informal memorial gathering will be held at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall immediately after church services on Sunday December 11. Refreshments will be served.

James Bryant Harrill

James Bryant Harrill died Friday, December 2, 2016 at the McLeod Hospice House. Mr. Harrill was the son of the late Bryan Holbert Harrill and Maggie Ruth Nickles Harrill, and grandson of the late Glannie and Charles Harrill of Bennettsville, S.C. and the late Margaret and Hunter Nickles of Hodges, S.C. He was loved by his wife of 40 years, Margaret “Peggy” Leach Harrill, and two children: Rebecca “Becky” Althea Harrill, and Charles “Hunter” Harrill. He is also survived by three siblings: Susan Nickles Harrill Driggers and her husband Randy of Greenville, N.C., David Harmon Harrill of Charlotte, N.C., and George Glenn Harrill and his wife Josie of Bennettsville, S.C. He is also survived by a brother in law Rick Leach and his wife Gail of Bristol, Connecticut.

He departed his earthly life on December 2, 2016. He fought the good fight with Pulmonary Fibrosis, Myeloplastic Dysplasia, and acute Leukemia. He was a teacher at Northeastern Technical College in Cheraw, having retired from there in June. He was also employed as a guard at several prisons in South Carolina through the Department of Corrections. He was proud of his education, having earned a Bachelor’s degree from Erskine College in Due West, S.C., a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of South Carolina, another Masters in Vocational Technical Education from Clemson University, and still another Master’s in Human Resources from Webster University- but he was most proud of his Doctorate in Education from the University of Northern Colorado, in Greeley, Colorado. He enjoyed working with his hands doing either metal work or woodworking. He also was an avid reader.

The breadth of his knowledge was broad, and he loved challenging his children in what they did and did not know about history. He was always there for them, reminding them of the value of an education and how he was proud of their accomplishments.

Graveside services were held at Greenville Presbyterian Church in Donalds, S.C. on Tuesday, December 6 at 2:00 p.m. There will not be any visitation hours at the request of the family. Memorials may be made to Florence or Darlington Humane Societies in honor of him, or to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society of South Carolina. May God bless each person who reads this and has a good memory of him. Belk Funeral Home in Darlington is aiding the Harrill family is this difficult time. John Roy “Buddy” Skinner, Sr.

John Roy “Buddy” Skinner, Sr., of Darlington died on Monday, November 28, 2016.

Buddy’s wishes were to donate his body to the Medical School, so there will be no services held.

The family received friends at the home on Thursday, December 1, 2016 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m.

Buddy was born in Florence, S.C. He was the son of the late, Toy W. and Doris Dorriety Skinner.

Surviving are his loving wife of 60 years, Dorothy Skinner of Darlington; his son, John Roy Skinner, Jr.; his grandchildren, Amber Skinner, Emily Skinner, and Tara Perkins and husband, Chris; and his great grandchildren, Dusten Skinner and Jackson Perkins.

The family would like to thank everyone for the love and prayers shown to them during this difficult time.

Sammie Lee DuBose

Funeral services for Mr. Sammie Lee DuBose of Darlington were held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 3, 2016 at New Providence United Methodist Church in Darlington. Interment followed in the church cemetery directed by Jordan Funeral Home, Inc.

Mr. DuBose was born in Darlington County, a son of the late Thomas DuBose, Sr. and Irene Hines DuBose. He died Saturday, November 26, 2016 in a Florence hospital.

Mr. DuBose received his education in the public schools of Darlington County. He was employed with E.D. Pew Timber Company for many years and most recently was a self-employed farmer.

Survivors are: his wife, Minnie Jane Pendergrass-DuBose; two sons, William (Rhonda) Lighty, and Kenneth (Geanary) DuBose; one daughter, Terrie DuBose (Dallas) Hamlin; two sisters, Fannie Heath and Mary Lowery; one brother, Mace (Trannie Mae) DuBose; three sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; 17 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 2901 Southborough Road, Darlington.

Mary Anne Sansbury

Mary Anne Harris Sansbury, 90, passed away on December 1, 2016 after a brief illness. She is survived by her children: Clevie (Tony) Daniels of Ypsilanti, MI, Andy (Patti) Sansbury of Spartanburg, Dan (Joye) Sansbury of Hartsville, and Susan (Artie) Hall of Managua, Nicaragua; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mary Anne was a native of Anderson, S.C. and the younger daughter of Leon and Susan Harris. She graduated from Winthrop College in 1946, and began teaching physical education in Darlington schools that fall. She married Paul A. Sansbury, Jr. in June of 1947. They built a home on Greenway Drive in 1951, and raised their family on that remarkable street with several dozen “baby boomer” children born to the Word War II generation. Mary Anne taught Red Cross swimming classes to two generations of children and youth, as well as leading her two daughters’ Girl Scout troops plus a den of Cub Scouts. She was a member of the Darlington Presbyterian Church until 1991, when she became a member of Lamb’s Chapel, Florence. She wrote a weekly column featuring testimonies of faith of area people for The News and Press for over twenty years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Sansbury; her sister, Margaret Meetze of Heath Springs, S.C.; and her brother, Bill Harris of Manning, S.C.

Friends were invited to remember Mary Anne with the family at a time of visitation from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Belk Funeral Home on Friday, December 9. A memorial service was held on Saturday, December 10 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a graveside at Grove Hill Cemetery. Her pastor, Rev. Lonnie Curl, Lamb’s Chapel, and her son, Dr. Dan Sansbury, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Hartsville, will lead the services.

The family wishes to thank her many excellent caregivers at the Morrell Rehabilitation Facility, Carolina Pines Hospital, and McLeod Hospice House.

Terry Andrews, Sr.

Terry Lee Andrews, age 65, died Wednesday, November 30, 2016. A funeral service was held in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 3, followed by burial in Grove Hill Cemetery. The family received friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Born in Darlington on April 3, 1951, he was the son of the late Orin and Macie Sims Andrews. Terry enjoyed drag racing with his nephew, and watching sports. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, and feeding the animals around the house. His favorite greeting was a friendly kiss on the cheek. Mr. Andrews was a member of the First Church of God in Darlington.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Redick Andrews; their son, Lee (Keisha) Andrews, and their daughter, Cellina (Clark) Epps; grandchildren: Madie and Bo Andrews, and Gracie and Grant Epps; a brother, Mike (Karen) Andrews, all of Darlington; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Diane Andrews.

Vera McInville

Vera Griggs McInville, age 54, died Tuesday, November 29, 2016. A funeral service was held in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home on Saturday, December 3, at 2:00 p.m. Burial followed in Black Creek Cemetery.

Born in Darlington on July 5, 1962, she was the daughter of the late W.S. and Frances Cagle Griggs. Vera was a devoted housewife who had also worked for AMANA, FLAV-O-RICH, and Galey and Lord. She enjoyed decorating, especially at Christmas. Vera will be remembered for her beautiful voice and her love of singing.

She is survived by her daughter, Stacey McInville of Darlington; her husband, Kenneth Howle of Florence; grandchildren Ashley Humphries and Gunner Wiggins; her siblings: Diane (Bobby) Bell of Hartsville, Calvin (Annette) Cagle of Pine Ridge, Wesley (Janice) Griggs of Darlington, Gerald (Tammy) Griggs of Darlington, Clarence (Marie) Griggs, and Billy Griggs, all of Darlington; and a special friend, Donna Atkinson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Danielle McInville, and infant sisters, Mary Frances and Sandra.

The family received friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at Belk Funeral Home and other times at the home of her brother and sister-in-law Gerald and Tammy, 1057 Georgeanne Dr., Darlington.

Leonard S. Argo Jr.

Leonard Stewart Argo Jr., 53, died November 29, 2016. Leonard was born February 22, 1963 in Kingstree, S.C. He was the son of the late Leonard Argo, Sr. and Betty Argo of Kingstree.

Surviving of the home are his wife Vanessa Argo; daughter Alaina Argo and mother-in-law Rosalie C. Payne; his daughter Ryan Argo (Brandon Carper), grandchildren Hayden Perillo and Layla Carper of Summerville, S.C.; his sister Starr Argo, niece Tobin Lee, and nephew Toby Lee Jr. all of Darlington.

Leonard was a loving and devoted husband and father. He was member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He was also a long time employee of the Hartsville Oil Mill. Memorial services will be held December 10th at 1:00 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Darlington, located on 513 Gilchrist Road.
