Sandra Kay Miller

Belk Funeral Home – Sandra ‘Sandy’ Kay Davis Miller, age 72, died Friday, March 31, 2017. A funeral service was held at noon Thursday, April 6, 2017 in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home, with burial following in Florence National cemetery. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Born March 2, 1945 in Alexandria, VA, she is the daughter of the late Harry Cleveland Davis, Jr. and the late Katherine Tillis Davis. Mrs. Miller worked as a receptionist in the medical profession until her retirement. She enjoyed being at home and tending to her home and keeping up her yards. Sandra enjoyed shopping on eBay, and was a collector of different types of dolls. She and her husband Jim are active members of the Moose Lodge in Darlington, with Sandra being a member of Women of the Moose.

She is survived by her husband, James ‘Jim’ Miller, three children: Keli R. (Tony Noll) Miller of Mechanicsville, MD, James Kevin (Tracy) Miller of Myrtle Beach, SC, Richard Kyle Miller and his fiancé, Sharon of Waldorf, MD; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and a sister, Linda (Frankie) Coombs of White Plains, MD.
Following the service at the Florence National Cemetery, everyone is invited to a reception at the Moose Lodge in Darlington.

Rose Walters Moore

Belk Funeral Home – Rose Walters Moore, age 55, passed away Monday, April 3, 2017. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 8th in the chapel at Belk Funeral Home. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Born May 19, 1961, Rose is the daughter of the Heyward Walters and the late Betty Teal Walters. She worked for the Charlotte Observer, and also enjoyed working with the public. Rose loved to spend time with her family and friends.

In addition to her father, she is survived by her children, Chris Walters, Jamie Jones, Derrick Moore, and Tamara Moore; five grandchildren; her siblings, Tammy Walters, Mitchell Walters, and David Walters.

Leisha Carter

Belk Funeral Home – Leisha Elaine Carter, age 45, passed away Saturday, April 8, 2017. Graveside services were Tuesday 4 p.m. in Swift Creek Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home. Visitation was 6 – 8 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.

Leisha was born in Florence County, daughter of Roy Carter and the late Martha Howle Courtney. She was the granddaughter of the late William H. “Bill” and Virginia F. Howle, who raised her. She was a hairdresser and enjoyed her friends, family and watching NASCAR. Leisha grew up in the Swift Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her father and stepmother, Gail Carter of Darlington; two brothers: Lee (Heidi) Carter and Eddie “Peanut” Carter (Taylor Eslinger) also of Darlington; one sister, Laci (Wayne) Hanna of Florence; also her nephews: Ladson Carter, Logan Carter, Cole Hanna and Caleb Hanna.

Jessie Coggeshall Rogers

Belk Funeral Home – Jessie Williamson Coggeshall Rogers died at the McLeod Hospice House in Florence, on April 5, 2017, after a brief illness. Born August 22, 1926, she was the daughter of Jessie Keith St. Clair Williamson and Marion Lide Coggeshall, of Darlington, South Carolina.

Jessie had a remarkable memory and was a true student who loved learning. She graduated as Valedictorian of her class at both St. John’s High School in Darlington and Stratford [Junior] College in Danville, Virginia. On April 24, 1948, Jessie married Frank Esby Rogers, Jr., of Darlington. In 1960, she returned to school and graduated from Coker College with a degree in Chemistry and a Teacher’s Certificate.

She especially loved teaching math and language arts to sixth graders (Delmae Heights in Florence, St. John’s Elementary School in Darlington and James F. Byrnes Academy in Quinby) and visiting and caring for older family members. She was a member of Over the Teacups Club, the Old Homestead Club, and the Castalian Club. A lifelong member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Jessie served the church in many ways: Sunday School teacher, Confirmation teacher, as an active member of the Altar Guild, the Vestry, the Women of the Church, and various Parish Life activities.

Jessie is survived by one daughter, Jessie Rogers Whitaker and her husband George of Darlington; her grandchildren, Anne St. Clair Whitaker and Jane Rogers Field of Austin, TX, and Thomas Rogers Coxe of Darlington; her sisters Emmy Lou Coggeshall Donald of the Presbyterian Home in Florence, SC, and Marion Coggeshall Huggins of Pawley’s Island, SC; and her sons-in-law David Field of Monroe, GA, and Ricky Coxe of Darlington. She is also survived by step-grandchildren and their families who she considered her own: Simon Whitaker and his wife Megan of Clinton, SC; Stephen Whitaker, his wife Beth and their children Avery and Myles of Asheville, NC; Richard Coxe, his wife Fairlie and their daughter Gracie of St. James, NY; and Elizabeth Coxe Hubbard, her husband Alan, and their sons Hampton, Charlie, and Waits, of Hartsville, SC.
Jessie was predeceased by her husband, her daughters Mary Rogers Field and Marion Rogers Coxe, her granddaughter Marion Coggeshall Field McKenna, her nephew Geoffrey David Huggins, and two brothers-in-law, Alexander Grant Donald and Clarence Pope “Tony” Huggins, Jr.

The family received friends at the Rogers home, 548 Rogers Rd., Darlington, on Monday, April 10, from 5 – 7 p.m. The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 11th, at St. Matthew’s Church, Darlington, SC, followed by burial in Grove Hill Cemetery. It will be officiated by the Rev. Hunter C. Jordan and directed by Belk Funeral Home.
