Weaver, Matthews win state runoffs

Ellen Weaver is the GOP nominee for state education superintendent and Krystle Matthews is the Democratic nominee to challenge U.S. Sen. Tim Scott this fall, after the two scored victories in June 28 primary runoffs.
Those two races were the only races on the runoff ballots in Darlington County, and turnout was small – about 3,000 people voted, said county elections chief Hoyt Campbell.
Statewide, Weaver easily defeated opponent Kathy Maness for the education superintendent nomination. (Outgoing Education Superintendent Molly Spearman had endorsed Maness.) In Darlington County, Weaver was also the favorite, getting 1,316 votes to Maness’ 956.
Statewide, Matthews defeated her opponent, Catherine Bruce, in a much closer race. In Darlington County, Bruce led the way with 444 votes to Matthews’ 278.
